Tarot, Superstition, Myth and Folklore

The tarot has been shrouded in mystery petty much since it was birthed. My personal belief around this mystery and the tarot is that I believe it has to do with protection. Protection of the sacred art of reading itself. Like anything sacred, sometimes people tell porky pies to keep their heritage hidden, and to keep it away from those who would potentially misuse and abuse it. I believe the majority of the superstitions are based on fear, lack of true knowledge or simply peoples lack of understanding.

Superstitions raise so many questions.

Do I have to buy my own deck, Do I have to be gifted my first deck? Can other people touch my cards? Do I have to wrap my cards in a purple cloth and place in a wooden box?

Folklore - Many people simply do not understand the tarot and the mainstream media has not helped with their setting images of an old gypsy sitting in the corner showing the Death card with spooky music and all. People are known to fear what they don’t understand and this is very often the case with tarot cards. Sometimes theses fears can hold back a reader form deep diving into tarot. It is my hope that you come to understand that tarot can be used not only for divination or reading , tarot can also be used for self-development, mental health, therapy, inspiration and lifestyle enhancement.

Popular myths:

Your first deck must be a gift or handed down

This was true for the travelling Roman Gypsies. Tarot was considered a sacred art that was passed down through the maternal line and was considered a rite of passage. Not so true for today. There does not need to be a family linage when it comes to tarot. Now if there is a generational connection here, then, today it is more about tradition and ritual within the family as one becomes old enough to learn the art of tarot. Which leads me to the next myth

You have to be psychic to use tarot

Nope – this is BS – does it help – yes absolutely – is it necessary – absolutely NOT!!! AND intuition can be developed and there is no better tool to do that then tarot itself!

You must not profit or read for money

This particular myth has help back many readers from earning good money for excellent services provided. Kinda makes my blood boil actually. Total BS – if this were true, I’d be out of business along with most other readers. Most people who have founded spiritual communities or find themselves sharing their gifts within these spiritual communities want to sincerely help others and come across people who can only pay very little or nothing at all. This is what I believe has led to this perceived limitation around how much a spiritual person can or should charge. The truth is that this is more about the readers personal money story and whether or not they believe what they have to offer is worthy and of value. Personally – yes, there are times when I will not charge or I charge minimal. Tarot reading is a service – if you are providing a service then you very much should be paid for providing that service. If you are feeling that you shouldn’t charge or can only charge very little, then my advice is to work only your money mindset and your self-worth.

Reading or playing with tarot cards is the devils work

Everything is energy – good, bad or otherwise. Like attracts like. This is ALL about intention and energy. Intention is EVERYTHING!!! I Cannot reiterate this enough. What you put out is what you get back – so check where your mind is at, check into your purpose for doing the reading – what intentions are you setting here? With every single reading, I set the intention to help, uplift, inspire and guide my clients and as such, I have helped 1000’s of people make positive life changes, relieved their anxieties and confirmed what they already knew. I have my own little rituals that I perform to cleanse myself and my cards as well as my intentions, I also say a prayer before I begin – I do these things to enhance the energetics. Now this is something I could write a whole blog on!

Tarot is hard and extremely complex

NO! Tarot doesn’t have to be hard and extremely complex! It can be and it doesn’t have to be. If you are finding it complex and you want to give up – get yourself a different teacher/guide - serioiusly. Anyone can learn – its about learning to connect with your intuition – here’s a tip – you do not need to remember every card according to what the book says. What if I told you that the particular meaning of the particular card you are looking at is not in the book? What If I told you that particular meaning will be found in that particular moment – on the card – not in the book?
