Can tarot be chosen for a specific purpose?
YES, it most certainly can
Some people like to have different decks at the ready so that they can easily put their hands on them and quite often they like to use these different decks for different reasons or specific purposes.
Personally, I find it useful to have a variety of decks within reach that I can call upon for specific purposes. There are many reasons that you may decide to choose to have several tarot decks for specific purposes.
Here are some of mine:
I have a working deck; this is the deck I utilise when clients pay me for a reading. I have a shared deck, this is the deck I use when in a sharing environment, such as when I sit it circle or meditation groups. I have a deck when I am working with shadow – be it my shadow or a clients shadow, I have a teaching deck for when enlightening my students and I also have a deck when working with clients purely therapeutically. Then of course I have the many decks that I feel into on a daily basis for no specific purpose – now that’s a whole different story for another day!!
I was contacted by someone who is fairly new to the tarot world and she ask the question around self-care and the tarot and I’ve got to say her question lit me right up!!!
“Can I and how do I choose a tarot deck for self-care?”
Excellent question! Excellent way to utilise the tarot too!!
Intention is EVERYTHING!!!
When giving something a specific purpose, some thought around the specifics is important. You want your self-care tarot deck to be vastly different from your shadow work tarot deck as they are vastly different and the ways of working with the tarot in these ways carry vastly different energetics.
So lets say you have decided to choose a deck for self-care – now what?
Questions to ask yourself before choosing your self-care deck. These questions will provide you with some insight into what type of deck you may be seeking or which type of deck will work best as a self-care guidance system for you.
“What does self-care mean to you specifically?” Is it hard core or soft and fluffy? Is it physical health only?
Do you like bright colours or pastel?
Do you relate more to animals than people?
How do you like to be spoken to? – loud, soft, abruptly or gently?
Do you like your mind to be busy and creative or calm and clear?
The answers to questions like this will be an indication about the type of self-care deck that you are seeking.
Now here comes the tricky part – DO NOT allow your mind to take over – these are questions for your body to answer. When it comes to self-care and what we truly need – our body ALWAYS knows the truth of the moment and the truth of what it is that we need.
As you look at and feel into the various decks available – notice what your body is telling you. What sensations is it sending you? What deliciousness can you feel it wanting to dive in to? Or is it repelling away?
If you prefer a gentle approach with self-caring then a soft gentle card is more what you are looking for. If you prefer to allow your mind to be open, expansive and creative during your self-care moments then you may prefer a very colourful and detailed card. Once you have determined what type of deck you are seeking, cross reference by checking in with your body. Simply turn in to how your body feels and what sensations it is sending you when you are holding your potential self-care deck in your hot little hands.
The right deck for you will be evident to you once you move through this process. First, last and foremost – trust your own inner guidance system – you intuition.
