Birds

Totem Animals are Spirit Guides who serve as messengers that can help us gain insights into our past and into our future. They can enhance our self-awareness and personal reflections. They can also provide direction or clarity if we find ourselves standing at a crossroads or with a difficult decision to make.

Lately I have been seeing birds everywhere. In one afternoon alone I had 3 beautiful little kingfishers, 5 miners, 1 crane, 1 heron, 1 low flying kookaburra, 1 dove and a magpie with its baby all fly into my awareness; and that doesn’t include the birds that we soaring too high for me to clearly identify. I think that it’s fair to say that is a lot of birds in a short space of time.

Birds have been said to represent freedom and are the messages that connect heaven and earth – that is the connection between human and Source (Divine) – messengers of God if you like. The deeper symbolic meaning comes from the individual species – a dove for example has become associated with peace among other things while a swan is associated with personal grace.

The day after my Dad passed away, I had a dream of a tiny little bird sitting on my pillow. I could very clearly see the indents that this little bird’s feet were leaving on my pillow. My thought at the time was “Oh my…. Dad, you certainly gave a bigger impression in life than what your little feet are showing right now”. I remember that I could see into his tiny little eyes and the moment I looked into the little bird's eyes, I was overwhelmed with an incredible love. It was as if my Dad was saying that he was not far away and I felt so comforted knowing that he had visited me.

We receive messages and guidance all the time - it’s a matter of being open to seeing them.
